About the dress

For men – Pag is a turban styled in a particular way. There is ornamentation on the turban,
known as Turlal Torla, and it looks like a fan. Men also wear a necklace known as Kaintha. They
wear a kurta, a slightly longer shirt than a traditional shirt, and the bottom is a silk-like cloth that
starts from the waist and ends on foot. It is tied around the waist properly, and this is known by
various names, loike tehmat or lungi or chadar. Just above the shirt, a waistcoat which has no
button is worn. Two scarves called rammal are worn on fingers, one on each side.


For Women – Most women dancers wear a dupatta, which is a scarf. They wear it on their head.
Women wear a shirt called kameez and loose-fitted pants, sometimes with flair known as salwar.
Tikka is jewellery that is worn on the forehead, and jhumka is a long earring which is gold in
colour. Braid is very important, and every woman has to braid her hair with tassels, known as
Paranda. Suggi-phul is also a jewellery work on the head. Haar-Hamela is a gold necklace worn
by women. Baazu-band is a cloth worn on the upper arm, and Pazaibs are traditional anklets
worn by women.
